The authors report their experience of 101 cases of right colon cancer, observed at the Surgical Sciences Institute of the University of Siena. Diagnosis was made mainly by colonscopy, which showed the presence of cancer in 66 of 69 patients. Rx examination of colon with barium enema was also effective, while sonography of right abdomen has recently shown real utility. All patients underwent surgery: 86 right hemicolectomies, in 68 cases with curative intent, 11 ileo-colostomies and 4 explorative laparatomies were performed. Statistical analysis of prognostic factors indicated the importance of preoperative fever, histologic grading, level of parietal infiltration of cancer and lymphnodal involvment.
