Since 2017, after 8 years of interruption, we resumed the excavation of Poggio Imperiale at Poggibonsi (SI), under the direction of Marco Valenti (University of Siena). The longue durée occupation of the site, already recognized in the previous research campaigns, revealed the human constant presence for over a thousand years, from a small village in the 5th century CE, to a Lombard village in the 7th to 8th centuries CE, and finally to a Carolingian curtis of the 10th to 11th centuries. After the 11th century, which for no evidence of occupation has been identified, during the 12th and 13th centuries the fortified village of Poggio Bonizio was founded in 1155 and destroyed in 1270 by Florence. The latest occupation phase dates to 1313, with the foundation of Monte Imperiale by the emperor Arrigo The Seventh. The 2017 and 2018 excavation campaigns have been extremely interesting because new data on the south-western slopes of Poggio Imperiale were brought to light, especially related to the large and structured factory district of Poggio Bonizio. The early Middle Ages structurews found in the last campaign confirms the 7th to 9th centuries occupation also for this area.

Abstract
The early Middle Ages structurews found in the last campaign confirms the 7th to 9th centuries occupation also for this area.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
