This article examines the ideas and the lexicon of the war in the ancient Greece, especially in the historical and philosophical thought of the V and IV century b.C. (Herodotus, Thucydides, Plato, Aristotle etc.). The author studies mainly the meaning (which isn’t always the same in the sources) of the words stásis and pólemos, the relations between them and the political and juridical problems concerning the notions of díkaios pólemos and díkaia aitía (or arché) of war.

Quest’articolo affronta le concezioni e il lessico della guerra nell’antica Grecia, e in particolare nel pensiero storico e filosofico del V e IV secolo a.C. (Erodoto, Tucidide, Platone, Aristotele etc.). L’autore studia soprattutto il significato (che nelle fonti non è sempre il medesimo) dei termini stásis e pólemos, le relazioni fra essi e i problemi politici e giuridici relativi alle nozioni di díkaios pólemos e di díkaia aitía (o arché) della guerra.
