Abstract

The word anacrusis was coined by Gottfried Hermann as a translation of the musical term Auftakt. Its adoption in the field of classical metrics aimed at reproducing a graphic convention of modern music (the exclusion of an initial "upbeat" from the first bar of a song), in order to justify a practice of scanning iambic metres that went back to Richard Bentley.
