Abstract

Christopher Browning's recent volume on the KZ lager of Starachowice critically compares almost 300 oral sources which were collected at different times and places. However the marginal differences in the personal narratives strongly underline the general agreement about the direct responsibilities of the Nazi officials who were not prosecuted by the German courts, as well as the different behaviour of the Jewish inmates, ranging from open rebellion to collaboration.
