Human visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a reemerging disease around the Mediterranean Basin. The causative agent is Leishmania infantum. The existence of ‘reservoir’ hosts (mainly dogs), the effects of HIV infection and other causes of human immunosuppression, and the frequent absence of strategies for the systematic monitoring and mapping of the disease are serious challenges to its effective control (Dujardin, 2006). The main aim of the present study was to obtain epidemiological data on VL by reviewing the human cases that have recently occurred in an endemic area of central Italy.
