Sperm selection and incubation under capacitating condition is associated with a strong increase in mitochondrial respiration. The sperm oxygen consumption rate could be useful in order to exclude mitochondria malfunctioning in male infertility. Because of the high sensitivity, this assay can also be used in oligozoospermic subjects and possibly included in the semen routine analysis
