We demonstrated that the fluid produced by the female reproductive accessory glands of the dipteran Ceratitis capitata has an antibacterial activity. This property is ascribed to the presence of two cationic peptides (3kDa molecular mass) named ceratotoxin A and B, in addition to a lysozyme-like activity. We have isolated and sequenced the cDNA encoding ceratotoxin A. The analysis of the gene expression showed that the ceratotoxin is female-, adult- and tissue-specific, and regulated by the juvenile hormone.

Abstract
We demonstrated that the fluid produced by the female reproductive accessory glands of the dipteran Ceratitis capitata has an antibacterial activity. This property is ascribed to the presence of two cationic peptides (3kDa molecular mass) named ceratotoxin A and B, in addition to a lysozyme-like activity. We have isolated and sequenced the cDNA encoding ceratotoxin A. The analysis of the gene expression showed that the ceratotoxin is female-, adult- and tissue-specific, and regulated by the juvenile hormone.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
