Cochlostoma esuanum n. sp. is described from the non-marine early Pliocene of Balze di Caspreno (Siena, Italy). C. esuanum is the first fossil Cochlostoma reported from the Neogene of Apennine Italy and together with C. excellens (Jooss, 1912) from the Upper Miocene of Steinheim (Germany) is the second oldest, sure record of a Cochlostoma not related to the species of the Obscurella group.
