Current advances in knowledge of the biology of human papillomavirus (HPV) is reviewed. The evidence of its role in the genesis of carcinoma of the cervix is presented as a model of the oncogenic potential of HPV. A common theme of HPV prevalence, transmission and importance of cofactors is presented at the epidemiological level. This is also considered at the molecular level with the role of the E6 and E7 ORF and their interaction with P53 and Rb. Cofactor effects at this level are discussed.

Abstract
Current advances in knowledge of the biology of human papillomavirus (HPV) is reviewed. The evidence of its role in the genesis of carcinoma of the cervix is presented as a model of the oncogenic potential of HPV. A common theme of HPV prevalence, transmission and importance of cofactors is presented at the epidemiological level. This is also considered at the molecular level with the role of the E6 and E7 ORF and their interaction with P53 and Rb. Cofactor effects at this level are discussed.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
