This work demonstrates that exposure of mice to chrysotile asbestos can induce a pulmonary inflammatory reaction with subsequent progression to fibrosis. Not only is this morphologically similar to those changes seen in human cases of asbestosis, but the exposed mice also develop immunologic abberrations described in humans with this disease. Thus, our murine model of asbestosis offers a unique, valuable tool for the assessment of local pulmonary as well as systemic immunity and cellular dynamics during the pathogenesis of this disorder.

Abstract
This work demonstrates that exposure of mice to chrysotile asbestos can induce a pulmonary inflammatory reaction with subsequent progression to fibrosis. Not only is this morphologically similar to those changes seen in human cases of asbestosis, but the exposed mice also develop immunologic abberrations described in humans with this disease. Thus, our murine model of asbestosis offers a unique, valuable tool for the assessment of local pulmonary as well as systemic immunity and cellular dynamics during the pathogenesis of this disorder.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
