In Tuscany, and especially in the province of Siena, viniculture and olive-growing are the most common occupations. This study examined respiratory health, dermatosis and skin sensitization in a popolation of Tuscan farmers caused by occupational exposure. A questionnaire was used to obtain information concerning a range of associated risk factors. The farm workers were assessed by physical examination and prick tested with 12 common allergen extracts (Graminaceae, Compositae, Parietaria officinalis, Olea europea, Cupressus sempervirens, Dermatophagoides pteronysinus and farinae, Alternaria, Aspergillus fumigatus, Storage mites, Cat and Dog hair, Horse dandruff and negative and positive controls) and some local occupational allergens. Respiratory function was evaluated by spirometric examination. In our study the risk of sensitization was not higher among Italian and foreign farmers than in the general population. The prevalence of respiratory disease was similar in both groups, including smokers. Dermatitis is often underestimated. It probably depends on individuals frequently having to change tasks on farms. Symptoms such as conjunctivitis, rhinitis ecc. did not differ between farmers and the control group.
