In thispaper,weevaluateenergyefficiencyintheEuropeanfreighttransportsectoroverthreedecades, according toavarietyofindicators,methodologiesanddatabases.Theaimis,ontheonehand,of determining majordrawbacksinenergyefficiencymetrics,ontheotherhand,identifyingapossible trend inthesector.Thepresentanalysisshowsthatenergyefficiencyevaluationisgenerallysubjectto misinterpretationanddistortionwithregardtothemethodsanddatasourceadopted.Twodifferent indicators(energyintensityandfueleconomy)wereinitiallytakenintoaccounttoselectthemost suitableforevaluatingvehicles’efficiency.Fueleconomywasthenadoptedandmeasuredaccordingto two differentmethodologies(top–downandbottom–up).Wethenconsideredallthepossiblesourcesof distortion (datasourcesemployed,methodsofdatadetection,speedofdetection,powerenhancement, size factor)withtheaimofaccomplishingasoundestimation.Fueleconomywaseventuallydivided with themaximumpoweravailable(adjustedfueleconomy),toaccountforthepowershiftofvehicles, that representsafurtherefficiencyimprovement.
