The aim of this study was to assess psychological and emotional responses in patients admitted to surgery for breast cancer. The survey, based on administration of psychological tests, involved 138 women aged between 30 and 60 years, with no psychiatric history, who were studied with a view to assessing pre- and postoperative emotional status related to type of surgery performed (mastectomy without reconstruction, mastectomy with reconstruction, QUART). The incidence and severity of responses indicating psychic stress was lower in patients admitted to reconstruction than in the ones who were only mastectomized. The condition of fear in reconstructed patients was lower than in the ones admitted to QUART.
