Inthispaper,aninvestigationofdigitally-implemented maps is carried out, and their suitability for the implementation of integrated pseudo random number generators is investigated. Their statistical properties are evaluated for increasing values of the bit precision in the arithmetic circuits. Results obtained are compared to those obtained with traditional PRNGs based on Linear-Feedback Shift Register (LFSRs). Analysis shows that, in contrast to results previously reported in the literature, digital maps are suitable for a PRNG implementation only at the cost of a very high circuit complexity, i.e. a much larger silicon area and power dissipation at a given bit rate.
