Endogenous formation of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) (Fig. 1) has been described in humans [1]. It is considered to be a neurotransmitter and/or neuromodulator although its precise physiological role remains unclear [1]. This molecule is used in the treatment of alcoholism and alcohol withdrawal [2±4]. GHB, at least in central nervous system, has ethanol-like activities [5,6] and it is well-known that ethanol decreases platelet function (reviewed in Refs. [7±9]).
