This essay analyses the innovations of Sophocles' Philoctetes, which are peculiar to this tragedy and distinguish it from the previous epic and tragic versions. The comparison allows both to understand the meaning of the innovations in the structure of the drama and to exploit the peculiar values taken up by different characters. This allows to understand better the role of folkloric themes in the drama, also with reference to some trends in modern critics.
