De Propaganda Inquisitione. O controlo do Santo Ofício Romano sobre e através da Congregação Missionária

A Congregação da Inquisição Romana tem sido o centro da cúria papal durante séculos e, em alguns aspectos, ainda o é. Ao longo dos séculos, mostrou-se determinada a não conceder a outras instituições o controlo da ortodoxia, da ortopraxia, da moralidade e da disciplina do clero, tanto em Itália como no resto do mundo. O ensaio destaca alguns dos principais desacordos doutrinais e diplomáticos que dividiram o Santo Ofício papal e a Propaganda Fide, desde as primeiras tentativas de criação desta última até aos nossos dias. Foi uma longa tensão, feita de sinergias e de confrontos, através da qual a Igreja de Roma conseguiu impor a sua autoridade à custa dos padroados reais, de algumas ordens religiosas e de outras Inquisições.

The Congregation of the Roman Inquisition was for centuries, and in some respects still is, the centre of the papal curia. Over the centuries it has shown itself determined not to allow other institutions to control orthodoxy, orthopraxis, morality, and discipline over the clergy, both in Italy and in the rest of the world. The essay highlights some of the main doctrinal and diplomatic disagreements that have divided the Holy Office and Propaganda Fide, from the first attempts to create the latter to the present day. It was a long tension, made up of synergies and clashes, through which the Roman Church managed to impose its authority at the expense of royal patronages, some religious orders and other Inquisitions.
