The figure of the tightrope walker, in Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra, has always been studied in relation to its symbolic and philosophical value: it fully represents the idea of ‘living dangerously’. This article offers a new interpretation and places the tightrope walker at the centre of a musical interest. Concepts derived from Soundscape studies will be used, such as: ‘sonic environment’, sound cosmology, ambient noises. This perspective will give the character of the tightrope walker a different depth and emphasize his philosophical significance. This article strengthens the idea that Thus Spoke Zarathustra is also a musical work.
