The city is a mosaic of layered memories, where street names embody official narratives and collective identities, shaping a community’s cultural imagination. In the 1980s, the spatial turn highlighted how urban space is shaped by power dynamics and symbolic negotiations between past and present. In this context, street naming is not merely administrative but reflects ideological and cultural tensions. This article examines colonialism in Italian public memory through republican street naming, exploring the persistence of old names and the introduction of new ones, with a focus on local case studies.
