Per una teoria freudiana della rappresentazione del lavoro nel romanzo: alcune ipotesi preliminari [Toward a Freudian Theory of the Representation of Labour in the Novel: Some Tentative Hypotheses]

This article sets to explore, from a theoretical perspective, the problem of the representation of labour in the novel. The first paragraph discusses «the plainness and iterativeness of work», which are the two aspects that, accord-ing to James Agee, make it such a peculiarly complicated narrative theme. The problem is thus theorized in terms of the ways in which the theme of iterative work can be effectively expressed in novels. The second paragraph is functional to the argument developed in the third and last paragraph, and deals with a non-literary problem. Through a meta-psychological reading of Weber’s Protestant Ethic, it offers an interpretation of the capitalist ethics from a psychoanalytic conceptual framework. The third and last paragraph discusses Francesco Orlando’s Freudian theory of literature, Orlando’s take on the notion of «return of the repressed», and his theorization of the representation of obsolete objects. Finally, I argue that it might be possible to recognize, in literary language, mechanisms that express the instances of the Super-ego.

L’articolo, che riassume la proposta teorico-letteraria sviluppata nella mia tesi di dottorato, si propone di esplorare la questione della rappresentazione del lavoro nel romanzo. Il primo paragrafo discute «l’elementarità e l’iteratività del lavoro», che sono i due aspetti che, secondo James Agee, fanno del lavoro un tema particolarmente complicato da rendere narrativamente. Il problema viene quindi posto nei termini seguenti: quali sono i mezzi formali attraverso i quali il tema del lavoro iterativo trova efficace rappresentazione nel romanzo? Come parla il lavoro, tema elusivo e che sfugge alla rappresentazione (Denning), nel romanzo? Il secondo paragrafo è funzionale al terzo e affronta un problema non letterario. Attraverso una lettura meta-psicologica dell’Etica protestante di Weber, viene offerta un’interpretazione dell’etica capitalista all’interno di un quadro concettuale psicoanalitico. Il terzo paragrafo discute la teoria freudiana della letteratura di Francesco Orlando, la sua visione del concetto di «ritorno del represso» e la sua teorizzazione della rappresentazione degli oggetti desueti: si argomenta che, a complemento della teoria di Orlando che si fonda sulla prima topica e prende in considerazione solo i contenuti inconsci dell’Es, potrebbe essere possibile riconoscere, nel linguaggio letterario, anche meccanismi che esprimono le istanze inconsce del Super-io.
