The requirement for vitamin D is ensured by 80% from sunlight exposure and 20% from dietary intake. Vitamin D3 is found in fish, liver, eggs, milk and dairy products, and mushrooms. A deficient intake of vitamin D in the diet can lead to hypovitaminosis D. We have observed that in Italy the average daily intake of vitamin D is 204 IU ± 137 in women and 185 IU ± 49 SD in men. An extension of this study has been able to confirm this aspect. The inadequate dietary intake of vitamin D significantly contributes to the development of an insufficient vitamin D status.
