The Sephardic communities that were established in Italian territory as a result of the expulsion edicts of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, despite the difficulties of exile in a new and unknown homeland, did not give up producing their own literature. It is a minority production within the canon of Italian literature and yet it tells us about those ante litteram “new Italians”. By studying the texts that have been preserved (unfortunately in a limited number), it is possible to delineate the Italo-Sephardic identity of a group on the margins of society, which for a long time had to live hiding that identity for fear of persecution.

Abstract
The Sephardic communities that were established in Italian territory as a result of the expulsion edicts of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, despite the difficulties of exile in a new and unknown homeland, did not give up producing their own literature. It is a minority production within the canon of Italian literature and yet it tells us about those ante litteram “new Italians”. By studying the texts that have been preserved (unfortunately in a limited number), it is possible to delineate the Italo-Sephardic identity of a group on the margins of society, which for a long time had to live hiding that identity for fear of persecution.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
