Piccola e grande patria: alle radici dell’altra faccia del nazionalismo estetico letterario delle origini, nell’esperienza de «Il Regno», tra Firenze e Siena

Small and large homeland: at the roots of the other side of early aesthetic-literary nationalism, in the experience of “Il Regno”, between Florence and Siena. ABSTRACT: The experience of the magazine “Il Regno” was significant in the genesis of Italian nationalism, beginning with aesthetic and literary themes that supported the idea of a strong state bound to the nation as a response to modernization challenges. The contribution from a segment of the Sienese ruling class to the creation of the magazine was notable, both financially and contentwise, facilitating the synthesis between the modernizing momentum of emerging nationalism and the conservation needs of its rural and provincial roots. The myth of Siena as the “Gothic queen” aptly illustrates the dialogue between the small and large homeland within the early, diverse nationalism before its crystallization.

– L’esperienza de “Il Regno” fu importante per la genesi del nazionalismo italiano, partendo dai temi estetico letterari, a sostegno di un’idea di stato forte da saldare alla nazione, come risposta ai temi della modernizzazione. Il contributo di una parte della classe dirigente senese nella genesi della rivista fu sensibile in termini finanziari ma anche di contenuti, facilitando la sintesi tra lo slancio modernizzatore del giovane nazionalismo e le istanze di conservazione della sua matrice rurale e di provincia. Il mito costruito intorno a Siena di “regina gotica”, quindi, ben testimonia del dialogo tra piccola e grande patria interno al “vario” nazionalismo delle origini, prima della sua decantazione.
