The catalog proposes to let know to a wide audience the history of the painting atelier of the former neuropsychiatric hospital of Arezzo, once located in the Pionta, where the Arezzo University Campus is currently located. The painting atelier was founded in 1958 and initially also availed himself of the collaboration of the Roman artist Franco Villoresi (1920-1975). Many patients participated, over the years, in the Arezzo hospital atelier. Through the exhibition of around a hundred pictorial works of the former patients the role of the Arezzo laboratory was partially reconstructed. The catalog opens with a contribution by the psychiatrist Roberto Boccalon on the connections between art and psychiatry. Afterwards, the activity of maestro Franco Villoresi is examined, with an essay by Luca Quattrocchi. Subsequently, the activity of the artistic laboratory is presented with a selection of pictorial works by some patients (curated by Sabrina Picchiami), up to the main section of the exhibition: the activity of Livio Poggesi, the most assiduous and competent student of the atelier, edited by Paolo Torriti. The volume ends with a contribution on the archives of psychiatric hospitals and in particular on the Arezzo one, edited by Stefano Moscadelli, Antonella Moriani and Lucilla Gigli.
