This essay aims at assessing to what extent Brexit can be seen as a direct legacy of Thatcherism. The first section explains what is Margaret Thatcher’s peculiar place in the very heterogeneous phenomenon of British Euroscepticism. The second section analyses the leaderships composition of the main pro-Brexit groups, in order to assess if their political histories as well as their motivations to sustain Brexit can be described as Thatcherite. By drawing data from the many post-vote analysis, the third section discusses the geographical distribution of the Brexiteer voters as well as the socio-economic contexts in which they prevailed. This allows to assess if and to what extent Brexiteer voters can be considered as Thatcherite. Finally, the fourth section assesses if and to what extent Brexiteers motivations can be labelled as Thatcherite. All this allows to fully assess the correct historical per-spective from which to read the Brexit phenomenon.

Abstract
All this allows to fully assess the correct historical per-spective from which to read the Brexit phenomenon.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
