This paper addresses some translation issues relating to the Latin poetic language, specific focus being on some challenging aspects which Alfonso Traina as a critic and a poet-translator had to face. The paper primarily discusses the problem of how to transfer the rhythm from a Latin poetic text to an Italian translation. In this regard, a selection of the solutions provided by Traina in his translations of some poems by Catullus (cc.5, 8, 11, 38, 46, 76, 85) is here considered. Lexical questions are then examined with particular reference to how Traina translated complex concepts such as fides and pius/pietas between Catullus (c.76) and Horace (cc.2,14,2; 4,7,14-16 e 23-24).
