The book deals with the legacy of social constitutionalism. It considers that it represents the most serious attempt to fight the principle of hierarchy which is still structuring human societies and human thinking (especially by the way of vertical metaphors). It succeeded in getting more equal societies, especially in Western countries, but it lost its force in the last thirty years.
