Bayle’s rationalism’ and ethical universalism, which recognizes the « nature of things » as the inescapable basis of moral judgement, is married to anthropological naturalism, which highlights the physical and psychological mechanisms that determine the great variability of customs and moral codes. Two different ’natural ethics’ whose coexistence is necessary in the view of Bayle, even if it is not peaceful or unproblematic.
