The article aims to put to the test the old thesis of Contardo Ferrini, according to which Paul is said to have realised a composite writing project on criminal law and penalties, through three libri singulares: De poenis militum, De poenis paganorum and De poenis omnium legum. It is precisely the examination of the latter work, in its entirety and in the detail of the surviving fragments, that seems capable of revealing important information on the reliability of the very assumptions of such a reconstruction, and furthermore of stimulating a more general reflection on the manner in which Roman jurisprudential writings were created. © 2023, Mucchi Editore. Abstract
