Abstract. We propose to examine the nature of lexical variation in a textual tradition that has been printed, the C family of the Secret of Secrets’. Two incunabula are taken into consideration: the edition of N. Philippi and M. Reinhart (Lyon, ca. 1478) and that of A. Verard (Paris, 1497). After having located these two editions never studied until now in the textual branch from which they derive, their vocabulary is confronted with the lexical variations of the whole of the manuscript tradition. This non-exhaustive examination allows conclusions to be drawn both on the varied nature of lexical variation in the tradition, and on some specificities of the printed editions.
