The essay has two main purposes. The first consists of a general reconstruction of Cattaneo's linguistic thought, highlighting the most important aspects both as regards the reflection on the connection between language and the community of speakers, and as regards the study of the functions and properties of language. The second concerns a first reconstruction of the influence that Cattaneo's philosophy had on Italian linguistic culture between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth.
