This work aims to investigate a space-time that is specific and representative at the same time, that of Bologna in 1977, which becomes the centre from which to observe: the motives and practices of the protest movement; the research carried out in those years by professors within the university; the narrative production of two generations, that of Umberto Eco and Gianni Celati on the one hand and that of Enrico Palandri, Pier Vittorio Tondelli and Claudio Piersanti on the other. Within this panorama, archaeology represents the operational metaphor chosen to attempt to reconstruct the catalogue of ideas and “artefacts” of a historical period marked by advanced capitalism, a society of control and spectacle, and a postmodern cultural logic. It is in response to this new social order that the creative practices of the movement (of the A/traverse collective in particular) based on the decentralisation of contestation in the fields of language and media can be explained. From the streets we will move to the university and to the period covering the decade prior to the 1970s, in order to investigate two significant lines of research: the archaeological investigation – which is developed around the project of a magazine, “Alì Babà”, in which Celati, Guido Neri, Carlo Ginzburg, Enzo Melandri and, outside the university context, Italo Calvino participate – which aims to recover the “historical removed” and for which Ginzburg's contribution on the circumstantial paradigm and its epistemological implications will be particularly useful; and popular culture – starting from Bachtin's analysis of it in the book dedicated to Rabelais – which investigates (in the various disciplinary declinations) the subjects, practices and knowledge that have been reduced to silence by official history. We will then delve into the non-fiction work of Eco (reconstructing his various theories of interpretation, applied to the sign, texts and mass culture) and Celati (in particular his reflections on the novel and the comic), placing them in dialogue in the converging spaces of research. Lastly, we will deal with the narrative work of Celati and Eco – representatives of two different positions in the post-modern panorama, which makes “recuperation” its aesthetic mark – and of the “young writers” who were the protagonists of 1977, concentrating only on the texts published in the 1970s and 1980s.

Il presente lavoro si propone di indagare uno spazio-tempo specifico e rappresentativo al tempo stesso, quello del Settantasette bolognese, che diviene il centro da cui poter osservare: i moventi e le pratiche del movimento di contestazione; le ricerche che in quegli anni portavano avanti i professori all’interno dell’università; la produzione narrativa di due generazioni, quella di Umberto Eco e Gianni Celati da una parte e quella di Enrico Palandri, Pier Vittorio Tondelli e Claudio Piersanti dall’altra. All’interno di questo panorama, l’archeologia rappresenta la metafora operativa scelta per tentare di ricostruire il catalogo delle idee e degli “artefatti” d’un periodo storico segnato dal capitalismo avanzato, una società del controllo e dello spettacolo e una logica culturale postmoderna. È in risposta a questo nuovo assetto sociale che si possono spiegare le pratiche creative del movimento (del collettivo A/traverso in particolare) basate sul decentramento della contestazione nei campi del linguaggio e dei media. Dalle piazze ci sposteremo all’interno dell’università e al periodo che ricopre il decennio precedente il Settantasette, per approfondire due linee di ricerca significative: l’indagine archeologica – che si sviluppa intorno al progetto di una rivista, «Alì Babà», cui partecipano Celati, Guido Neri, Carlo Ginzburg, Enzo Melandri e, fuori dal contesto universitario, Italo Calvino – che vuole recuperare il “rimosso storico” e per cui ci sarà particolarmente utile il contributo di Ginzburg sul paradigma indiziario e le sue implicazioni epistemologiche; e la cultura popolare – a partire dall’analisi che ne fa Bachtin nel libro dedicato a Rabelais – che indaga (nelle diverse declinazioni disciplinari) i soggetti, le pratiche e i saperi che sono stati ridotti al silenzio dalla storia ufficiale. Approfondiremo poi l’opera saggistica di Eco (ricostruendone le diverse teorie dell’interpretazione, applicate al segno, ai testi e alla cultura di massa) e di Celati (in particolare le riflessioni sul novel e sul comico), ponendoli in dialogo negli spazi di ricerca convergenti. Tratteremo infine l’opera narrativa di Celati ed Eco – rappresentanti di due diverse posture all’interno del panorama postmoderno, che fa del “recupero” la sua cifra estetica – e dei “giovani scrittori” che di quel Settantasette erano stati protagonisti, concentrandoci unicamente sui testi pubblicati negli anni Settanta e Ottanta.
