The subject of the article is citation in painting as a specific mode of enunciative praxis. In particular, departing from a 1989 text by Louis Marin, the article focuses on a number of works by Jasper Johns that present, with varying degrees of evidence, references to Matthias Grünewald’s Issenheim Polyptych. The analysis of the works allows us to advance some hypotheses about the enunciational strategies underlying Jasper Johns’ work
