Literal meaning and contextual inquiry - The essay takes its cue from the debate on literalism and contextualism in the hermeneutic field and on the relationship between meaning and intention as discussed in the context of analytical philos- ophy. The essay aims at investigating if the rules devoted to the interpretation of contract by the Italian civil code could be better understood as a system of rules designed for the solution to be given to distinct classes of interpretative problems in the utmost respect of the principle of private autonomy.
