Hilde Domin – the pen name of Hilde Löwenstein Palm (1909-2006) – is considered one of the most important German poets of the period after the second World War. Raised and educated in Germany, from 1934 she lived as an expatriate in Italy, where she received a degree in political science at Florence University with a thesis on the humanist Giovanni Pontano. Her thesis advisor was Armando Sapori, one of the greatest Italian historians of the twentieth century. This essay not only analyzes the characteristics of Domin’s thesis, but also presents several letters that she sent to Sapori, first from Rome, where she met Giovanni Gentile, and then from the distant island of Santo Domingo, which she chose in 1940 as a refuge to escape from antisemitic persecution.
