Abstract

The period from 1910 to 1930 saw a halving of travel times in inland areas in just two decades, thanks to the improvement of roads and the introduction of motor vehicles. There was therefore an important progress in the public transport network, which already existed through the connection between trains and horse-drawn postal carriages. While traditional vehicles and bicycles numbered in the thousands, motor vehicles stood at a few hundred. The "ancient" society thus remained dominant, but the "modern" one traveled faster and faster. This article analyzes the reduction of travel times, considering in the background the issue of the birth and diffusion of bus lines. In the analysis of mobility at the provincial level, a limited increase in public transport services emerges. On the other hand, there was a marked reduction in travel times, which allowed the commuting phenomenon to start, especially for miners. Finally, it emerges that the bus company most present, Rama, developed, adopting a decisive diversification of services, that is, also dealing with trade, as well as local public transport. Public local transport since then did not seem a profitable business, not even with the contributions of the State, which donated a subsidy per kilometer, to which were added the traditional fees of the postal service.
