While mucosal vaccines have the potential to solve a number of high impact diseases such as HIV and TB, the development of mucosal vaccines has so far been a low priority on the global health agenda. The European Commission through the MUVAPRED program has been able to focus diverse academic and industrial partners on the development of mucosal vaccines and to move the field considerably, proving that mucosal vaccines against poverty-related diseases can work in humans.
