Consilia extravagantia: progetto di un census

Consilia are the best source to show the reception de facto of ius commune all over continental Europe; moreover, being bound to life cases, they let us better understand medieval and early modern society. Nonetheless, even if several researches focus on single collections or one specific consilium or one jurist’s writings, no attempt has been made until now of a general cataloguing of this source. Such a catalogue should include not only one author’s compilation, but also those many cases of consilia hidden in anthologies of other jurists and other kind of literature, subscriptions, additions, references to other advisers in the same matter, supporters, judges, editors and so on: a vast design to fulfill. For the time being our aim is to offer a cataloguing of the impressive collection of printed consilia owned by Domenico Maffei’s library, well known for its richness and “completeness”.
