Per una geostoria del termalismo toscano: dagli abbandoni ai casi di recupero e valorizzazione tra fine Novecento ed oggi

Tuscany boasts a thermal particularly numerous and relatively well distributed system in the territory, considering both the particular physical-natural and historical-political configuration of the region, and the wide range of nature of the waters (with regard to physico-chemical characteristics), with the consequent differentiated therapeutic qualities. The challenging research about the reconstruction of geo-historical dynamics between the late medieval and contemporary times (with preparation of geo-historical maps and descriptive sheets of all the thermal structures) was started at the end of the 20th century and it is still ongoing. The research, until now, allowed to record about eighty working structures (often in discontinuous phases) in this long period and has highlighted a wide variety of experiences, responding to strategies and political-economic goals, medical-health and tourism-spa: from real «cities of water», with their important buildings designed and with the villas, gardens, etc., to the humblest examples of buildings and waterworks used by local populations only. Overall, these are not secondary elements of a landscape system, environmental and cultural resources more or less exploited in economic and socio-health terms of a given territory that constitute a widespread and consistent «thermal heritage». The research wants to offer a contribution of original knowledge, which can also be used for safeguard, recovery, enhancement and development. The current reality is presented here, with the many criticalities, the few realizations, the many projects and project ideas. Along with a few examples, even recent ones, of recovery and enhancement (this is the case of the project currently in the Bagni di Petriolo), too many structures lie in different stages of abandonment and degradat

La Toscana vanta un sistema termale ricco e ben distribuito nel territorio, in considerazione sia della particolare configurazione fisico-naturale e storico-politica della regione, sia dell’ampio ventaglio della natura delle acque (quanto a caratteristiche fisico-chimiche), con le conseguenti differenziate qualità terapeutiche. L’impegnativa ricerca sulla ricostruzione delle dinamiche tra tempi tardo-medievali e contemporanei (con la redazione di mappe geo-storiche e di schede descrittive) fu avviata alla fine del XX secolo ed è tuttora in corso. Questa ha consentito, fino ad ora, di censire e mappare un’ottantina di strutture funzionanti (spesso a fasi discontinue) in questo lungo periodo e di mettere in luce una grande varietà di esperienze, rispondenti a strategie e finalità politiche ed economiche, medico-sanitarie e turistico-termali: dalle vere e proprie «città d’acque», con i loro importanti edifici progettati e con il corredo di ville, giardini ecc., ai più semplici esempi di singoli fabbricati e manufatti idrici utilizzati dalle popolazioni locali. Nel complesso, si tratta di elementi costitutivi non secondari di un sistema paesistico, risorse ambientali e culturali più o meno sfruttate in termini economici e sociosanitari di un determinato territorio, che costituiscono un diffuso e consistente «heritage termale». La ricerca vuole offrire conoscenze originali, utilizzabili anche per interventi di salvaguardia, recupero, valorizzazione e sviluppo in termini di fruizione pubblica compatibile di un patrimonio di beni paesistici spesso sconosciuto, di grande importanza culturale e architettonica, e talora dotato di risorse idriche suscettibili di una riconsiderazione economica, in risposta anche alla domanda di turismo culturale e del benessere. Della ricerca in corso viene qui presentata la realtà attuale, con le tante criticità, le poche realizzazioni, i non pochi progetti e idee progettuali. Accanto ad alcuni esempi, anche recenti, di recupero e valorizzazione (è soprattutto il caso del progetto che riguarda i Bagni di Petriolo), troppe strutture giacciono, infatti, in stadi differenziati di abbandono e degrado.
