In this study a technique, which identifies apoptotic cells by in situ end-labeling of DNA strand breaks, is associated with an immunohistochemical method for the detection of Bcl2 protein in order to demonstrate its presence in the residual cytoplasm of apoptotic cells, Microscopic examination of double stained sections showed that most of the apoptotic cells are Bcl2-negative even when the neoplastic elements are positive for this protein, Only few apoptotic cells seem to be surrounded by a cytoplasmic halo indicating a doubtful positivity, We cannot exclude the possibility that, in a Bcl2-positive lymphoma, some cells produce a minor quantity of this protein and so, no longer protected, they undergo apoptosis.
