During the XIXth century, the railway brought the greatest changes, also due to the fact that Italy has a largely hilly and mountainous territory. Even in the ancient port cities, the tracks were spread from the docks to the limits of the built-up areas and large maritime stations were built that moved the goods, also contributing to urban growth. In the countryside, the railway tracks along the river valleys attracted the residents of the medieval centers on the hills, and new settlements were built around the stations, the so-called “paesiscalo” (railway countries). The train station was something completely new compared to the old post stations, which were located in the heart of the cities and integrated into the historic centers. Since the 1840s, the main Italian cities underwent an urban change, caused by the construction of the head or transitstations. This paper analyzes the location of the stations in two Italian towns, a Mediaeval town and a port town, Siena and Follonica. It also focuses on the role of the changes, along the railway itinerary Siena-Follonica, which had a fundamental role of attraction towards the plains for the inhabitants of the hills. The railway was also important in the fight against “malaria” endemic disease.
Durante il XIX secolo, la ferrovia ha portato i maggiori cambiamenti nell’urbanizzazione, anche per il fatto che l'Italia ha un territorio in gran parte collinare e montuoso. Nelle antiche città portuali, i binari si sono ramificati dalle banchine ai limiti delle aree edificate e sono state costruite stazioni marittime per movimentare le merci, contribuendo alla crescita urbana. Nelle campagne, i binari lungo le valli dei fiumi attirarono gli abitanti dei centri medievali sulle colline, e furono costruiti nuovi insediamenti attorno alle stazioni, i cosiddetti “paesi scalo”. La stazione ferroviaria era qualcosa di completamente nuovo rispetto alle vecchie stazioni postali, che erano nel cuore delle città e integrate nei centri storici. Fin dagli anni 1840, le principali città italiane subirono un cambiamento urbanistico, causato dalla costruzione delle stazioni di testa o di transito. Questo articolo analizza lo sviluppo portato dalle stazioni in due città italiane, una città medievale e una città portuale: Siena e Follonica. Si concentra inoltre sul ruolo dei cambiamenti lungo l'itinerario Siena-Follonica, dove la ferrovia ebbe un ruolo fondamentale di attrazione urbana verso le pianure e le valli. La ferrovia fu importante anche nella lotta contro la malattia endemica della malaria.
