Una Repubblica tra due re. La visita a Lucca del pretendente Stuart nelle settimane dell'Atterbury Plot

A REPUBLIC BETWEEN TWO KINGS: THE STUART PRETENDER’S VISIT TO LUCCA IN THE WEEKS OF THE ATTERBURY PLOT ABSTRACT: In the summer of 1722 Clementina Sobieska went to take the waters at Bagni di Lucca. A few weeks later, she was joined by her husband, James III Stuart, pretender to the English throne. The alleged reason for his trip was to acknowledge the warm welcome Clementina had received; the actual one was to get closer to the port of Genoa and be ready to sail should the Atterbury plot create the conditions for a Stuart restoration. Using hitherto overlooked archival evidence, I reconstruct the Pretender’s Lucchese stay, with respect to episodes of court life (such as the performance of the royal touch); to the political debate that the event sparks off among the ruling class of the Republic on relations with king George I; and, most importantly, to the international picture painted by the reactions of James’s inner circle to news reports of the ‘troubles’ in England — which at first raised the Pretender’s hopes — and later of the exposure of the Jacobite conspiracy, whose main actors were arrested. In the very same days, James issued a Declaration, clandestinely printed and dated from Lucca, which was to be distributed in England and to evoke comment in the major European courts.

SOMMARIO: Nell’estate del 1722 Clementina Sobieska si reca alle terme di Bagni di Lucca. Qualche settimana dopo la raggiunge il consorte Giacomo III Stuart, pretendente al trono inglese; il pretesto è quello di ringraziare della splendida accoglienza riservata a Clementina, in realtà è una mossa per avvicinarsi al porto di Genova dal quale imbarcarsi per l’Inghilterra, se l’Atterbury Plot aprisse una possibilità alla sua restaurazione. Il saggio – avvalendosi di documentazione archivistica finora non sfruttata – ricostruisce il soggiorno lucchese sia per gli episodi della vita di corte (come il tocco delle scrofole), sia per il dibattito politico che la vicenda suscita nei governanti della Repubblica sui rapporti col re Giorgio I, sia – soprattutto – per il quadro internazionale che emerge nelle reazioni dell’entourage di Giacomo alle notizie che avvisi e gazzette diffondono sui “torbidi” inglesi, che dapprima lasciano sperare esiti favorevoli allo Stuart, e poi rivelano la scoperta del complotto giacobita con l’arresto dei principali organizzatori. Proprio in quei giorni, e con la data di Lucca, Giacomo stampa alla macchia una Declaration poi diffusa in Inghilterra e al centro dei commenti nelle principali corte europee.
