Abstract
Following a reconstruction of surface events, the Risorgimento could be interpreted as a limiting geopolitical issue or change in the forms of state and government. It was not just that. The light that shone in the eyes of the very young - many also in Arezzo and province - who risked their lives on the battlefield meant this but also other. The dream of a free society. A better future for the community, the reunion with the most advanced nations; the progress. Be patriots was not easy. Beyond the Grand Ducal apparatus supervision, was not the breeding ground of a ruling class unwilling to change, basically conservative if not reactionary. In this reflection, deepening our larger works, we tried to track down those contained in Arezzo volunteers. Heroism of Severi, the future leader of the Left, Romanelli, he was a Minister of Justice and Grace Cults in the Tuscan provisional government, the citizens, doctor who had visited Leopold II, the baker Coleschi said "Rogantino", the Republican Fantozzi, Angelo Maltagliati, fell in Rome outside the Porta S. Pancrazio, were crowned with success. Those who devoted the most green years were the deserved glory (almost always recognized late), but above all their Italian. In private some reached the top of the public sphere, the liberal professions or were good and honest craftsmen. After dark years, full of disappointments, in the mid-sixties came a kind of miracle, the first concrete "Risorgimento Arezzo". The arrival of the railroad and, with it, the station, put an end to isolation. Economic and triggered substantial changes consequences. In the background, the distant origins of progress, at last remembered with monuments, plaques, inscriptions, on obituaries, with the construction of the memory of the Risorgimento, they were the footprints of the volunteers for independence. Not infrequently the traces of their blood. Giabbani from Arezzo and Francesco Raffaello Dendi from Montevarchi, affected in Bezzecca, Francesco Ghignoni dead boy in the fighting of the Volturno and the other fallen would rest in peace.
