Da un Teatro povero ad una “comunità ricca”. Forme di “resistenza” in un borgo del sud della Toscana

When in 1967 the first show of what would become the Teatro Povero of Monticchiello was produced, no one would have imagined its long fortune and, least of all, that 50 years later it would end up representing a unique “cultural” experience in the Italian and international scene. In the 1960s, with the crisis of sharecropping and people abandoning the countryside, the theater represented a project of “resistance” against the great transforma- tion that threatened an entire community. The people of Monticchiello, a small rural village in southern Tuscany, felt the need to represent their dis- like in public and share it with everyone. Today the Teatro Povero is far more than a simple “show”. Around this experience a museum, a cooperative, and a series of services have been created. All things that make life easier for the people who have decided to stay in a beautiful place but far from everything. The paper, using many sources and methods of analysis, is mainly focused on three aspects: the historical, political and social events that promoted the birth and the development of Teatro Povero; the dramaturgy model used to represent not only local events, but also a series of social issues chosen by the people of Monticchiello: from the environmental crisis to the growing global fears; finally, the author examines how this cultural event became a keystone for the community, not only for the period of the show but also dur- ing the rest of the year.

Quando nel 1967 fu messo in scena il primo spettacolo di quello che poi diventerà il Teatro Povero di Monticchiello nessuno immaginava la sua lun- ga fortuna e tantomeno che, a 50 anni di distanza, finisse per rappresentare un’esperienza “culturale” unica nel suo genere nel panorama italiano e inter- nazionale. Negli anni ’60, in piena crisi della mezzadria e di abbandono delle campagne, il teatro incarnò un progetto di “resistenza” alle grandi trasforma- zioni che minacciavano di spazzare un’intera comunità. Le persone che per scelta o necessità restarono a Monticchiello, un piccolo borgo rurale nel sud della Toscana, sentirono la necessità di “mettere in scena” e di rappresentare il loro disagio e condividerlo con quello che poi sarebbe diventato un pub- blico fedele e numeroso. Oggi il Teatro Povero è molto di più di un semplice “spettacolo” perché intorno a questa esperienza sono nati un museo, una co- operativa e una serie di servizi che facilitano la vita a chi ha deciso di restare in un borgo bello ma lontano da tutto. Il paper, utilizzando una pluralità di fonti e di metodi di indagine, descrive questa realtà soffermandosi su tre aspetti principali: le vicende storiche, politiche e sociali che hanno stimo- lato la nascita e fatto crescere il Teatro povero; il modello drammaturgico utilizzato per rappresentare e mettere in piazza non solo le vicende locali ma anche tutta una serie di questioni sociali - dalla crisi ambientale, alle paure e alle incertezze crescenti - scelte dalla gente di Monticchiello; infine l’autore analizza come questo “prodotto” culturale sia divenuto nel tempo il perno attorno al quale ruota un’intera comunità, non solo nel periodo dei riflettori accesi sullo spettacolo ma anche durante il resto dell’anno.
