In the 28th canto of the Paradiso, Dante sees cerchi d'igne rotating around a bright point, and Beatrice tells him about the features and distribution of the nine angelic hosts according to the Dionysian ordering, and about their function as celestial spheres' movers. This function, far from being indisputable, had raised a debate - in particular within the Dominican order - still topical and in risk of heterodoxy at the time of Dante: Dante's choice is neat and audacious. Abstract

An account of the philosophical context is given; nonetheless, in this context there is erence to the vision of the angels placed in concentric circles surrounding God, the light source. Instead, it is in the mystic tradition - And mystic is the Dantesque context as well - where we can find such a precedent: it is the case of the Liber Scivias by Hildegard ofBingen. There, a vision akin to Dante's one is pictured, and it is coupled with an extremely similar description of the angelic choirs.
