Focusing on Hofmannsthal’s Paris sojourn of February–April 1900, when he wrote Vorspiel zur Antigone des Sophokles, this essay will attempt to investigate the psychological and theatrical motivations that influenced the poet’s relationship with the character of Antigone. It also intends to explain how and why this figure, emblematic of sisterly heroism and emancipation, would soon be overshadowed by the daughterly and oppressive rigor of Electra. © 2016. Abstract
