The present article offers a large-scale survey of the Latin declamations dealing with parricide. Because of the importance of the father/son relationship in Roman culture, the topic of parricide is widespread, being attested in both declamatory collections and rhetorical handbooks. Examination of the topic sheds light on the contradictions and pathologies of the Roman family and provides a glimpse into the dark side of a strongly patriarchal society.
