Integration of geomatics techniques for the digital documentation of heritage areas

Prompted by the increasing requirement for the fast but precise and detailed digital documentation of archaeological excavations, site and heritage artifacts, we report the latest geomatics trend in integrating different data at different resolution to capture all the information required for a complete 3D documentation of heritage sites and archaeological excavations. Our case studies focus on two Tuscan archaeological sites of late antique-early medieval and roman time, located in the province of Siena, Italy. We report about the available geomatics techniques and methodologies to digitally document large sites, fulfil all the archaeological needs and exploit all the potentialities of the new digital surveying techniques.
