The European Union:Economics, Policies and History, third edition, contains material not included in the earlier editions. The book analyses the impact of recent developments in the European Union, with coverage of the Lisbon Treaty, the international economic crisis, the future of the euro and changes in international trade relationships. With respect to the earlier editions here is a new chapter on the 'Eurozone: Structure, Performance and Outlook', and new coverage of the Europe 2020 Strategy. Competition and industrial policies are addressed separately in different chapters and in increased depth. There has been updating of the coverage of issues such as the Common Agricultural Policy, and EU environmental and energy policies. For reasons of space two chapters from the second edition on EU Fisheries policy and on EU with the GATT/WTO have been removed and placed on the website of the book at www.mcgraw-hill.co.uk/textbooks/senior. Two chapters on transport policy and the Common Foreign and Security policy were also removed from the first edition and placed on the website. The three editions have different ISBN numbers: 0077107810 for the first edition, 077118136 for the second and 0077129660 for the third. The third edition of the European Union includes chapters on: an introduction to European integration; a brief history of European integration; the decision-making institutions of the EU; the theory of trade and the EU; the economics of integration; the Single Market; from the Lisbon Strategy to Europe 2020; movement of labour, immigration and asylum; the theory of Economic and Monetary Union; the long road to Economic and Monetary Union; the Eurozone: structure, performance and outlook; the EU budget; the Common Agricultural Policy; environmental and energy policies, regional policy, competition policy; industrial policy; EU trade and aid policies; and EU enlargement. The website also contains topical essays on the future of the euro, the Common Foreign and Security Policy, and Justice Freedom and Security, and a chronology of enlargement. There are case studies on Cassis de Dijon, the European Consumer Centre, Solvit, the Enterprise EU network, BSE or the mad cow disease, the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), EU regional policy, a cartel, state aid and EU-US trade disputes in the WTO. There are lecture outlines, powerpoints, self-text questions and answers to the questions for study and review for each chapter. According to the blurb on its cover, the book uses a combination of economics, policies and history to give the reader a strong grounding in European integration, and why and how policies are put in place. The book is designed to appeal to a broad range of people studying the European Union. The book uses appendices for more detailed discussion of the theory.
